Artist Statement

The Golden Years project juxtaposes the innocence of children’s literature with mass media imagery.  Each piece retains a strong piece of what we are taught as children (what we impose as parents to instill a strong moral compass, to live by the Golden Rule, antiquated ideas of how girls are supposed to behave and conduct themselves...) in a reality that often doesn’t practice what it preaches.  The Golden Years confronts the irony and hypocrisy of how those life lessons are contorted, ignored, forgotten, or discarded as we age; and asks the question, Why?

(Most of the collages, like the one below, include the text that was originally with the accompanying Golden Years image the collage is made from. When displayed, a replica with an adapted spine is presented with the image.
